THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY
January 5, 1920 > In perhaps the most famous transaction in baseball history, the New York Yankees formally announce the purchase of outfielder-pitcher Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox for $100,000 and an additional $300,000 in loans. In the ensuing 83 years, New York's 26 World Series titles to Boston's zero will prompt fans to refer to the sale of Ruth as the beginning of the "Curse of the Bambino."
